Athlone Institute of Technology has recently conducted a research on the effects of different natural oils on bacteria that are commonly found in the mouth. Coconut oil has proved to be the best.

It is already known that coconut oil has antimicrobial activity (that’s why it was added to finished food products as a prevention of spoilage during the 50’s and 60’s in the 20th century. Later this role was taken over by various chemicals and preservatives.) A new thing that research has discovered is that when coconut oil treats digestive enzymes, it effectively prevents the development of most of the bacteria that inhabit the mouth, including Streptococcus mutans, which plays a major role in tooth decay.

Coconut oil if used in this way may even destroy the candida fungus, which, if reproduced in large numbers can be the cause of many health problems.

This actually means: When you eat coconut oil (with the help of digestive enzymes), it can act antibacterial and antifungal at the same time. Researchers have also found that coconut oil can have a positive impact in relatively small quantities. So, it’s great for maintaining the health of the intestinal microflora.


Homemade coconut oil toothpaste

All you need is:

½ cup coconut oil

2-3 teaspoons of baking soda

15-30 drops of mint essential oil

Melt the coconut oil (until it becomes a liquid) and mix with the other ingredients. Put it into a jar and leave to cool. Use it as you would use a regular toothpaste.
